How to increase artwork resolution for better print quality

When you’re ordering custom products like stickers, t-shirts, or packaging, image resolution can make or break your print quality. Blurry or pixelated designs don’t reflect well on your brand or project.

That’s why we recommend using artwork that’s at least [300 pixels per inch (PPI)](https://www.stickermule.com/support/artwork-ppi). But what if your file falls short?
Here are three reliable ways to improve the resolution of your artwork:

##1. Track down the original (or recreate it)
The best place to start is by finding the original version of your artwork. Images downloaded from websites or shared via messaging apps are often compressed, which reduces quality. An original file, especially if it's uncompressed, will give you much better print results.

Vector files are ideal. Unlike raster formats (like JPG or PNG), vector formats (PDF, SVG, EPS, or AI) can be scaled to any size without losing clarity. They're perfect for logos, illustrations, and text-based designs.

###What if you can’t find the original?

The best packaging tape dispensers

We reviewed the most popular water activated packaging tape dispensers on the market. Here is what we thought of each one.

For most customers, all you need to apply [packaging tape](https://www.stickermule.com/products/packaging-tape) is a wet sponge. Simply cut the tape to your desired length. Then wet your sponge and apply moisture to the non-printed side of the tape to activate the adhesive. Once the adhesive is activated you can apply the tape to your desired surface. We include a free sponge with every order to help you get started using your packaging tape.

As your business grows, you may find it helpful to use a packaging tape dispenser to automate your shipping process. We reviewed 4 options that vary in price from $110 to $1,300.

##Packer 3S

The [Packers 3S](https://www.betterpackages.com/products/packer-3s-series/packer-3s/) is a manual tape dispenser.

It’s compact, which makes it easy to move from one location to another.

The water reservoir in the front is easy to fill and is the only setup required to start using the dispenser.

With the tape loaded and fed through the dispenser, pull the tape over the water brush to activate the adhesive and then lift up to cut it with the blade.

We noticed that feeding the tape through the dispenser can be difficult, and grabbing the tape so close to the water brush will usually leave you with adhesive on your fingers. And if you don’t manually run the tape over the brush, you’ll likely end up with some weak spots when you apply it.

The process of cutting the tape isn’t very smooth either and doesn’t always give the cleanest cut.

At $110, the Packer 3S is the least expensive tape dispenser on the market.

It’s a small upgrade from using a sponge, but only if you’re consistently doing 10 - 20 packages per day. 

##BP 333

The [BP 333](https://www.betterpackages.com/products/better-pack-333/better-pack-333-plus/) is another manual tape dispenser.

While it’s not as compact as the Packer 3S, it can still be easily moved.

The machine itself was a little tricky to set up, but easy to use once we got it going.

It features a large water tank which means you’ll be able to dispense plenty of tape before refilling.

The water brushes and the pressure plate work together to ensure each strip of tape is fully coated with water - giving your tape maximum sticking power.

The tape is easily loaded through the back of the dispenser.

The mechanism on the left of the machine, allows you to set a determined length for the tape.

To dispense the tape, simply pull down on the lever... and then release to cut it.

There is an optional heater attachment you can buy to ensure optimal tape performance - even in cold environments.

At $430, the BP 333 is on the higher end of manual tape dispensers. While it isn’t cheap, it is a huge upgrade from both the Packer 3S and the sponge method. And for less than half the cost of an electronic dispenser, the BP 333 gives you great efficiency for a great value.

We recommend the BP 333 for anyone doing up to 100 packages per day. 

##BP 555

The [BP 555](https://www.betterpackages.com/products/better-pack-555es-series/better-pack-555es/) is an electronic tape dispenser.

The machine itself is fairly easy to set up and easy to use.

There is a wide opening that makes loading and unloading the tape easy. The water tank is large and has a sealed cap designed to avoid spills. It also features a built-in water heater.

The BP 555 dispenses tape at an incredible speed. Each piece is fully coated with water to create a strong bond.

The numbers on the left side tell the machine how many inches to cut the tape. There are additional controls which allow you to adjust the length if you need something other than the standard options. There’s also a manual feed button which will dispense the tape until you let go. And with the repeat button, you can simply repeat the last length that was selected.

The automatic version of this model can automatically dispense a new piece of tape at the same length once the previous piece is removed. You can also program it to repeat 2 or 3 lengths, if you have something that requires a variety of tape lengths.

All automatic versions of the BP 555 are compatible with two optional attachments:

The AMD 1 is an automatic measuring device. Using high frequency sound waves, it measures the length of a package, then dispenses the appropriate length of tape, including the flaps - which you can easily program.

There’s also an optional foot pedal which works alongside the AMD, to free up your hands when dispensing the tape.

At around $1,000, the BP 555 is in the mid-range of electronic tape dispensers.

The optional automatic measuring device costs around $260, and the foot pedal costs around $60.

The programmable features and the optional attachments make the BP 555 one of the most powerful dispensers on the market. While you might not need every feature it has to offer, it would be hard to find a more efficient dispenser. The high price tag is worth it, if you are doing more than 50 packages per day, and especially worth it if you are working with packages of varying sizes. If the BP 555 is within your price range, we recommend going with one of the automatic versions to take full advantage of this machine’s efficiency.

##BP 755

The machine features a low profile design and a large top hatch for easy loading. The water tank is large, but it has a small opening and no sealed cap - this made it difficult to fill up and disassemble without spilling a lot of water.

There is a built-in water heater, which can be controlled by lifting up the front hatch.

This machine is very easy to set up and use. With the tape loaded and the water tank filled, simply choose your desired length, in inches, and the machine will dispense, wet, and cut a strip of tape. 

There are automatic versions of the BP 755 available to make things more efficient.

At around $1,300, the BP 755 is in the high-range of electronic tape dispensers.

Unless the low profile design is an important feature for you, we don’t recommend this dispenser. Despite the higher price tag, the BP 755 is actually less efficient than the BP 555 and doesn’t offer nearly the same amount of features.

##Conclusion

In summary, many people will find a wet sponge sufficient until they’re processing more than 20 packages per day. At that point, you may want to try the BP 333. If your volume grows beyond 100 packages per day then the BP 555 is worth the investment.

How to create a circle sticker in Adobe Illustrator

When designing circle stickers in Illustrator, there are two things that you’ll find on a lot of them: text that perfectly follows a circle's curve, and rotated elements around a central point without any flaws. 

These might seem tricky at first, but they're actually pretty straightforward once you know how.
I remember the first time I tried to make text follow a circle. Using the __Warp Tool__ seemed to be the logical method, but this only gets you so far. And trying to rotate multiple elements perfectly? 

I spent way too much time eyeballing positions only to have everything look slightly off. And manually dividing 360° wasn’t the quickest way to do this.

In this guide, we'll walk through these techniques step by step, so you can __create professional-looking circle stickers in a jiffy__. Whether you're making branded stickers for your business or fun designs for your personal collection, these tips will help you get the results you want.

###Step 1
Select the __Ellipse tool (L)__ and create a circle. You can either click your mouse to set an exact size or hold shift and drag + click to create it manually.

###Step 2
__Copy the circle__ (__⌘+C__ on Mac, __Ctrl+C__ on Windows ) and __Paste in Front__ (__⌘+F__ on Mac, __Ctrl+F__ on Windows). Give it an outline to get a sense of its size.

###Step 3
In the toolbar, __click + hold__ on the __Type Tool__. Then, select the __Type on a Path Tool__.

###Step 4
__Type your text__. By default, text is placed on its baseline. Let’s change that.

Double-click the __Type on a Path Tool__ and set the __Align to Path__ option to __Center__. Click __OK__.

###Step 6
__Duplicate the text__ and rotate it 180° using the transform handles. Hold __Shift__ to snap to clean steps of 45°.

###Step 7
__Double-click__ the __Type on a Path Tool__ again and check __Flip__. Click __OK__.

Place a circle on top, hit __R__, and __Option + click__ your mouse on the center of the circle to open up the __Rotate__ panel.

###Step 9
Set the angle to 15° and hit __Copy__ to duplicate it. Now use __Duplicate__ (__⌘+D__ on Mac, __Ctrl+D__ on Windows) to repeat those steps.

__Looking good!__ Now let’s add a line to the center. Use __Shift+W__ to edit the stroke width.

Repeat the same step by rotating the line using the __Rotate__ tool.

Nice! But those line endings are looking a bit wonky, __let’s make them smoother__.

Place a circle on top of the lines and select them together. Use __Object > Clipping Mask > Make__ (__⌘+7__ on Mac, __Ctrl+7__ on Windows) to create a __Clipping Mask__.

__Add some extra elements__ to spice it up a bit.

How to add a perfect margin to your design in Adobe Illustrator

If you’ve ever tried to enlarge certain shapes using Adobe Illustrator’s Scale tool, you’ve probably noticed something frustrating: the edges __don’t always align properly__. Instead of maintaining even margins, some areas become bigger than others, making your design look inconsistent and messy.

This becomes a real issue when designing stickers, where margins need to be precise, especially for [printing stickers](https://www.stickermule.com/custom-stickers), where the industry standard requires a __0.125” bleed__. 

Thankfully, Illustrator’s __Offset Path tool__ makes it easy to create pixel-perfect margins while keeping shapes intact. 

So, no need anymore to draw a line around your design with the Pen tool or try other complex and time-consuming methods.

Let’s break it down step by step.

##What is Offset Path, and why should you use it?
Offset Path allows you to create a duplicate of a shape at a fixed distance, either expanding or contracting it while keeping all proportions intact. This is particularly useful for:

- __Creating precise cut lines for stickers and print designs__
Most printers require a __0.125" margin__ for die cut and kiss cut stickers. Offset Path makes it easy to create __consistent, print-ready cut lines__ without manual adjustments.


- __Creating even margins around complex shapes__
Perfect for stars, icons, logos, and irregular shapes that __don't scale evenly__ with the standard Scale tool. Essential for maintaining precise spacing.


- __Making scalable text outlines and borders__
Creates __thicker text outlines__ that don't warp or stretch like the Stroke effect. Ideal for bold typography, badges, and retro-style sticker designs.

##How to use Offset Path in Illustrator for stickers
Let’s go through the steps to create perfect margins for stickers, using a star shape as an example.

###Step 1: Select your shape
Because we’re focusing on adding an exact bleed margin of __0.125”__, it’s important that your design is already in its final size. Make sure this is correct before you continue.
If your document is still set to pixels, let’s change this very quickly. Go to __File > Document Setup__. Under __Units__, change this to __Inches__. Hit __OK__.

Now select your shape. If your design already has multiple layers, select the outermost layer. 

Another way is to select your entire design and go to __Object > Expand__ to flatten everything and use __Window > Pathfinder > Unite__ to turn it into a single object.

###Step 2: Apply Offset Path
Go to __Object > Path > Offset Path__. In the pop-up window, set your __Offset__ value to __0.125 inches__ (minimal sticker bleed). 

Feel free to make this margin bigger if you think your design needs it. As long as it has a minimal margin of __0.125”__. Personally, I often like them to be a little bit thicker.

When you’re using Offset Path for this particular reason, keeping the __Joins__ to __Round__ is often the best setting to avoid messy edges. Click __OK__ to apply the changes.

###Step 3: Make adjustments
If needed, adjust the thickness or color to make it stand out. Like mentioned earlier, it doesn’t need to be __0.125”__ if you’d like to increase this a bit. It also doesn’t need to be white. 

You could even apply two different offsets to create a layered effect. Feel free to experiment with this.

###Step 4: Finalize your sticker design
Once you’re completely happy with your design, prepare it for print and/or digital use. If you’re going to print it, go the extra mile and include a cut line so your printer knows exactly where your sticker needs to be cut. This way, you know what to expect as well.

To do this, copy your original shape (__⌘+C__ on Mac, __Ctrl+C__ on Windows). 

Go to __Window > Layers__ and add a new layer using the __Create New Layer__ button.

Rename your layer to “Cut line” and paste the shape in there by using __Paste in Front__ (__⌘+F__ on Mac, __Ctrl+F__ on Windows). 

Give it an outline in a different color and name the swatch *“Cut line”* as well.

That’s it!

And as a comparison, here's what would have happened if you had used the __Scale tool__ instead of the __Offset Path tool__:

What a difference, right? That’s why I always recommend using __Offset Path__ for this, and it’s also by far the most used application of the Offset Path tool in Adobe Illustrator.

How to design a t-shirt in Adobe Illustrator

Designing a [custom t-shirt](https://www.stickermule.com/products/custom-t-shirts) is something I always wanted to try, and thanks to Sticker Mule’s Illustrator template, I found the process to be surprisingly smooth. 

If you don’t have your hands on professional software like Adobe Illustrator though, you can design it right in your browser using Sticker Mule’s free design app [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio/design/f7390c40-7fc1-4211-a607-8c58230f625f/edit). 

But in this tutorial, I’ll walk you through exactly how I designed my t-shirt from scratch using Adobe Illustrator, and how you can do it too.

##CMYK or RGB?
Before getting into the steps, one important note: I made sure to work in __RGB color mode__ instead of CMYK. This might seem counterintuitive since CMYK is usually made for print, but for [direct-to-garment (DTG) printing](https://www.stickermule.com/blog/dtf-vs-dtg-printing), RGB is actually the better choice. 

DTG printers are optimized to receive RGB files, and their software converts them to CMYK in a way that preserves a wider and more vibrant color range, closer to what you see on your screen. So if you're aiming for bold, vivid t-shirt designs, __RGB is the way to go__. 


###Step 1: Deciding where to start
I had two options: I could either upload my completed design and let them handle the setup, or I could download their easy-to-use template and customize the artwork myself.

Since I wanted to try this myself and finetune the placement on the t-shirt, I downloaded their template from [stickermule.com/templates](https://stickermule.com/templates) under __More > T-shirt templates__.

###Step 2: Setting up in Illustrator
Once I opened the template in __Adobe Illustrator__, I saw it had two layers:

- Instructions (locked)
- Artwork (where I placed all design elements)


The *Instructions* layer is a non-printable layer that helps you understand where the design should be placed on the artboard. The template is built in a way that scales along with different shirt sizes, so whether you’re looking for a Youth Small or an XXL, this file has you covered.

The *Artwork* layer is where you’ll need to be to work on your design. Anything you place inside this layer will be printed.

The gray box inside the template represents the printable area. Everything I want printed needs to stay __inside this box__ since anything outside it would get cropped.

The great thing about this template is that you see exactly where the __printable area__ ends, as your design will be hidden outside of those borders.

###Step 3: Adding my design
I created a fun fictional brand called *CourierBot* and started laying out the robot character with a speech bubble. I copied and pasted these vector elements into the __Artwork layer__.

When I pasted them in, Illustrator initially placed them outside the print area. And remember, __anything outside this area won’t be printed__. So I made sure I positioned them centrally inside the gray box. This works great!

###Step 4: Previewing t-shirt colors
To get an idea of how the design would look on different shirt colors, I created a new layer below the __Artwork layer__. Using the __Rectangle Tool (M)__, I drew a rectangle that covered the entire shirt area and filled it with red.

This immediately helped me realize that the blue parts of my robot weren’t really popping against that red background.

###Step 5: Fixing contrast issues
To fix this contrast problem, I selected these blue sparks using the __Direct Selection Tool (A)__ and changed their __fill color to white__.

Much better. But that speech bubble needs a bit of attention too. I changed it to white as well and the text got that deep maroon color from the illustration using the __Color Picker__.

This back-and-forth process of visual balancing helped ensure every element was readable and impactful. Make sure to check this for each t-shirt color you want to print. Background colors have a __huge impact on the design itself__ and this process lets you avoid any unwanted surprises.

###Step 6: Using the shirt color as part of the design
One neat trick I wanted to do was letting the shirt color show through parts of the design.

I selected the red fill from the robot's hat and buttons and simply deleted them. That made those areas __transparent__, meaning the actual red fabric of the shirt would show through when printed.

Even if you use the exact same colors as your fabric color, they’ll still be printed and you lose out on the opportunity to use the fabric as a color.

I also wanted the word "thing" in the speech bubble to show the shirt color. __Here’s how I did it__:

1. Selected the word “thing” and the white speech bubble.
2. I opened the Pathfinder panel (__Window > Pathfinder__) and clicked __Minus Front__ to subtract the word from the bubble.

That’s all! Now the red of the shirt fabric would appear in place of the word __thing__.

###Step 7: Outlining text
To avoid font compatibility issues during printing, [I converted all text to outlines](https://www.stickermule.com/support/outline-fonts):

- Select each text object.
- Right-click and choose __Create Outlines__, or select everything and go to __Type > Create Outlines__.

This turns the text into vector shapes and won’t cause any unwanted surprises during the printing process.

###Step 8: Improving colors for print
Shirts fade over time, so I wanted my colors to be more vibrant up front. Using the __HSB__ slider in Adobe Illustrator works very well for this. In Adobe Illustrator, HSB stands for *Hue*, *Saturation*, and *Brightness*.

- I opened the Color panel (__Window > Color__) and switched to __HSB__ mode from the drop-down menu.
- I selected the elements I wanted to adjust.
- I increased the __Saturation (S)__ slightly to make the colors pop more.

For example, I bumped the __Saturation (S)__ of the green by dragging the slider __to the right__.

I also slightly darkened the maroon for better contrast by dragging the __Brightness (B)__ slider __to the left__.

###Step 9: Cleaning up before saving
Before exporting, __I deleted the background color layer__ I used for previewing. This is __very, very important__ ,as it was just a guide and not meant to be printed.

I did a quick check to see if all my text had been converted to outlines, and after that, I was ready to export. ###Step 10: Submitting to Sticker Mule
With the file ready, I went to their [t-shirts page](https://www.stickermule.com/products/custom-t-shirts), picked the color and size, and hit the __Continue__ button to upload the artwork. You can order 1 shirt at a time, or multiple and in multiple sizes.

Here you can simply drag and drop your file or skip this step and email them the artwork later on.

They sent me a proof within minutes. If something had looked off, I could’ve requested __unlimited free adjustments__, but it already looked exactly like I designed it.
