How to make your own National Park magnets

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the "Mighty 5", the five National Parks of Utah including Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. 

One of the most awe-inspiring hikes was going through Bryce Canyon. I went with my family in February, meaning we had to wear ice spikes and winter clothes. It also meant we were treated to some of the most spectacular views available any time of the year with clear, crisp air and the hoodoo rock formations frosted with snow.

After our hike, we went to the Visitor Center. I wanted to treat my daughter to a nice souvenir so we could always remember our experience. 

In the magnet part of the National Park store, I came across magnets that looked like this.

Let me explain what you're looking at:

1. The image is a stock photo the manufacturer of this magnet [downloaded from iStockPhoto](https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/bryce-sunrise-gm465425161-33661250), taken in 2014
1. Even a junior designer can see that whoever "designed" this magnet did a horrific job at color correction. (Spoiler alert: the real Bryce Canyon is not the color of vomit)
1. The typography is hard-to-read and forgettable
1. Making matters worse, this magnet was mass produced in China, 6,500 miles away from Bryce Canyon

Every other magnet on sale was equally forgettable. 

What would you say if I told you that you could create your own National Park magnet:

##How to make your own National Park magnet

I'll go beyond saying it. I'll show you how I did it. 

###1. Select your photo

Believe it or not, choosing the right photo ended up being the most time-consuming part of this process. 

On the hike, I literally took over 500 pictures. If you've ever hiked Bryce Canyon, you'll know that an entire scene might look dramatically different in the matter of just a few minutes depending on the time of day, the weather, and even your viewing angle.

I finally decided on this one, one of the iconic views of a formation called Thor's Hammer, taken on my iPhone.

###2. Go to Sticker Mule Studio

###3. Choose your dimensions

The first step is to input your dimensions. I decided to use a width and height that matched the magnet I saw in the gift shop. 

- I changed the units to inches
- I entered 3 inches for the width
- I entered 2.5 inches for the height

The canvas size automatically adjusts once you enter this information.

###4. Upload your photo

Next, it's time to upload your photo. 

- Click the Uploads icon on the left side. 

- Click the blue __Upload Image__ button and upload your image.  Your photo will be placed onto the canvas.

###5. Adjust the photo to cover the entire canvas

If the aspect ratio of your photo doesn’t match the canvas, don't worry; simply enlarge and position the image as desired. Any portion outside the canvas will be automatically cropped.

If you intend to include text on your image, make sure to leave some blank space on the canvas.

Use the controls at the bottom of the page to zoom in or out of the canvas as needed.

###6. Put in text

The next step was to put in text. 

Click on the Text icon on the left-hand menu to reveal different text styles and templates. I chose the template that says "ASAP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"

I ungrouped the text and adjusted the color and positioning until I was happy with it. Notice how I intentionally cropped the photo so that there'd be a nice section of deep blue sky where a white font would stand out.

I clicked the __Order prints__ button in the top right corner. 

I figured I'd order the sample pack of 10 for $9. This way I'd have enough for my family, and also some to give out for Christmas and birthdays. 

For comparison, 10 mass-produced magnets at the gift shop would have cost me $39.90.

###7. Double-check everything

On the final step you'll want to double-check everything. Does the text look clear? Are all the words spelled correctly? Does the image appear crisp and in focus? Did you accidentally leave some gaps or unwanted white space around the canvas? 

I was pretty happy with mine, so I added it to my cart.

###8. Check out

On the checkout page, you'll enter or verify your shipping information, delivery date, and billing information. You'll see a note reminding you that orders created in Studio will bypass the proofing process (which you don't need because you can see exactly what the final product will look like on your screen).

###9. Order confirmation

Check out, and you'll get to a final confirmation page.

Your product will be sent to production and manufactured.

For those who didn't create their design in Studio, at this point order will go through our proofing process, where our team will send them an e-mail asking them to approve the final proof before being sent to production.

##Unboxing

Just one week later, my package arrived (two days before the estimated date).

As usual with Sticker Mule shipments, I got a few surprises in my package including the one I was hoping for: a few packets of Sticker Mule sauce! 

But of course, what I was looking forward to most was this: my 10 magnets carefully wrapped in shrink-wrap, which I quickly unwrapped. 

And here is how my magnets turned out.

I couldn’t be happier. The final product blew away anything I saw in the National Park gift shop. The colors were richer, the scene more meaningful—and best of all, it wasn’t some generic photo taken by a stock photographer a decade ago. It was the actual view I experienced with my family just two months earlier.

One thing I noticed—and something many customers have pointed out—is that these magnets are surprisingly thin. In my case, I also decided to [make a donation](https://shop.brycecanyon.org/donate.asp) to the Bryce Canyon Association, the official nonprofit partner of the park. 

When you gift your magnets to others, consider adding a note encouraging them to visit and support the parks too.

Clipping masks: miracle tool or printing nightmare?

On the production team at Sticker Mule, we often come across strange lines, missing artwork elements, or unexpected color issues. The culprit is often something you don’t expect: clipping masks.

Clipping masks are a powerful tool for controlling how images and shapes appear in your designs. They let you easily mask images into text, apply gradients within specific areas, or hide unwanted elements—without permanently altering your artwork.

But while they work wonders on screen, they can cause unexpected issues when it comes to printing.

Let’s break down why clipping masks can cause print errors and how to fix them.

##Why do clipping masks cause printing problems?

On your screen, clipping masks make artwork look clean and professional. However, when sent to print, they can introduce unwanted artifacts, misalignment issues, or missing elements. Here’s why:

- __Phantom lines or outlines__ – The edges of the clipping mask may still be faintly visible in the final print, even if they look perfect in Illustrator.

- __Misinterpreted colors__ – Clipping masks sometimes cause colors within the masked area to be interpreted incorrectly by printers.

- __Missing artwork__ – Some elements inside a clipping mask might disappear entirely when printed.

- __Raster and vector conflicts__ – If your file has both raster and vector elements inside a clipping mask, it can cause unpredictable results in the final print.

To avoid these issues, it’s best to __design without clipping masks whenever possible__—especially for print-ready artwork.

The video below shows what can happen when we receive an artwork with a lot of clipping masks. This particular artwork includes some vector elements, and we try to keep those by removing the clipping masks, which helps ensure the best quality for printing. 

There are a few steps we take to remove them. 

- First, in Illustrator, go to __Object__ > __Flatten Transparency__. Flattening the transparency is important to preserve the artwork’s look. 
- Next, to remove the clipping masks, go to __Pathfinder__ > __Merge__. As you’ll see in the video, sometimes the colors can get mixed up—like the green areas turning darker. In cases like this, where there’s a mix of clipping masks and raster images with vector art, we may need to rasterize the entire artwork to keep its original appearance.

##How to prepare artwork without clipping masks for printing

If you're using clipping masks in your design, here are three effective ways to remove them while maintaining high-quality output.

###Option 1: Recreate the gradient in Illustrator (best for vector artwork)

If you’ve used a clipping mask to apply a gradient to an object, consider creating the gradient directly in Illustrator instead. Here’s how:

Select the object you want to apply the gradient to.

1. Open the Gradient panel (__Window__ > __Gradient__).
1. Apply a new gradient to the object.
1. Save it as a swatch (__Swatches__ > __New Swatch__) to maintain consistency across your artwork.

By using Illustrator’s built-in gradients, you keep the artwork vector-based, ensuring a crisp, clean print.

By default, when you apply a gradient to live text in Illustrator, each letter receives its own individual gradient, which can disrupt the visual flow. To apply one smooth, continuous gradient across all the letters, simply convert the text into a Compound Path (⌘+8 on Mac, Ctrl+8 on Windows). This treats the text as a single shape, allowing the gradient to flow seamlessly from one end to the other.

###Option 2: Rasterize the clipped artwork (best for image-based designs)

If you’re clipping an image into text or a shape, you can rasterize the design to flatten everything into a single layer. Keep in mind that this will turn vector elements into pixels, so use it carefully:
Select the artwork (⌘+A / Ctrl+A).

1. Go to __Object__ > __Rasterize__.
1. Choose High (300 dpi) for print-quality output. 
1. Click OK.

When should you rasterize? If your design has a mix of raster and vector elements, we recommend rasterizing the entire artwork before printing to avoid overlapping issues. Remember to rasterize the file at the desired printable size to ensure a quality print.

###Option 3: Use the Pathfinder tool (best for fully vector artwork)

If your artwork is entirely vector-based, you can use the Pathfinder tool to remove clipping masks and preserve scalability.

1. Select all objects (⌘+A / Ctrl+A).
1. Open the Pathfinder panel (__Window__ > __Pathfinder__).
1. Click Merge to combine overlapping areas and remove any hidden clipping masks.

This ensures everything prints cleanly without excess elements affecting the final output.

## Final tips for print-ready files

To avoid common pitfalls when sending your artwork to print:
- Always test-print a small sample before submitting your final file.
- Save two versions: one editable file and one flattened print-ready file.
- Convert text to outlines (__Type__ > __Create Outlines__) to prevent font issues.
- Use PDF or EPS format for best compatibility with printers.

Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), every children's shirt sold in the U.S. must meet strict safety standards and include a tracking label. This label links the shirt to its manufacturer, batch number, and production date—helping ensure traceability and consumer safety.

In this example, the number "125" serves as a unique identifier for the batch of this shirt. In the rare event that the CPSC needs to inspect a specific shirt, this identifier helps us determine exactly when it was produced.

__Oeko-Tex certification__

If you're like most people, you may not give your fridge magnets much thought at all. They're kind of just there, staring from their cool abode while you come and go.

But at some point, these little collectibles became a part of our daily lives. When and how did that happen? Today we'll take a look at the history of fridge magnets and how they found their way to everyone's homes.

##The origins of magnets

To no one's surprise, the story of *fridge* magnets is tied closely to that of fridges. 
Magnets themselves, however, had been around a while. Lodestones — a type of magnetized iron ore — had been discovered as far back as 2500 BC, and magnetic properties had been employed in compasses since the year 1100 or so. 

But while magnets were no novelty when the first commercial fridges were made available, just before the 1920s, it was only around that time that the newly-discovered, more permanent steel magnets started finding their way into commercial applications, such as early electric motors and generators.

##The 1950s: The early years

The 1950s marked a turning point—not for magnets themselves, but for refrigerator design. As enameled steel became the industry standard, refrigerators gained a smooth, durable, and, most importantly, __magnetic__ surface

At first, this change was purely practical, making fridges easier to clean and available in a variety of colors to match the booming post-war consumer culture. But unintentionally, it also set the stage for something new. With metallic doors now common in homes, magnets suddenly had a new purpose beyond industrial applications.

The biggest innovation in refrigerators and magnets came with the introduction of the alnico magnetic alloy, which replaced traditional door latches. This upgrade made fridge doors more reliable and eliminated the safety risks posed to children by older latch mechanisms.

In the 1960s, refrigerator magnets were a far cry from the sleek, colorful, flat designs we’re used to today. They were more rudimentary, often clunky, and reflected the materials and manufacturing limits of the time. 

Fridge magnets existed but weren’t the flexible, fully magnetic items we associate with the term now. Early in the decade, they were typically small, rigid objects—think ceramic or plastic shapes with a tiny, hard magnet glued or embedded on the back. These weren’t "magnets" in the modern sense where the whole thing sticks; the magnet was just a component. 

Common designs included basic geometric shapes, letters, numbers, or simple figurines—like fruit, animals, or advertising logos. They were often chunky, with the magnet (usually a brittle ferrite or alnico type) protruding slightly, making them less flush against the fridge. 

Colors were limited—muted reds, blues, yellows, or plain white—due to basic painting or molding tech. They were usually imported from Hong Kong or Japan.

At this stage, fridge magnets were still more functional than fun. That changed late in the decade when __Sam Hardcastle__, an inventor and mold maker working with the space industry, was tasked with designing magnetic letters and numbers for use on large metallic charts. 

Instead of using traditional magnetic materials, he experimented with mixing __iron oxide (essentially rust powder) with vinyl__, creating a  flexible, fully magnetic material—meaning the entire object, not just a glued-on piece, stuck to metal. 

Hardcastle founded a company called Ad Specialities. His company produced molded, three-dimensional items, often hand-painted or dipped in vinyl. If you were around in the 1960s and 1970s, you probably remember one of Harcastle's most iconic creations: state-shaped magnets (like Missouri or Texas) about a quarter-inch thick, with raised details—maybe a little cow or cactus for flair.

They weren’t flat like today’s printed ones; they had a tactile, sculpted feel, sometimes with a glossy finish. Colors got bolder as vinyl allowed it—bright reds, greens, or blues—but still not the photo-realistic prints we see now. These magnets were bigger and heavier than earlier versions, designed to hold papers securely, and often doubled as souvenirs or promo giveaways.

Today, Ad Specialities no longer exists, a company named Ideaman, Incorporated was founded in 1992 and [continues to produce magnets](http://classicmagnets.com/history-of-the-classic-magnet/) true to Hardcastle's original designs as Classic Magnets.

##The 1970s: Fridge magnets become fun

The evolution of fridge magnets took a significant step forward in 1972 with the release of Fisher-Price's iconic "School Days Desk"—an educational toy featuring colorful magnetic letters and numbers. While similar concepts had been introduced earlier by companies like Child Guidance, Fisher-Price’s version was a game-changer.

These game sets included their own metal boards, but was there really a need for that? Inevitably, all those eye-catching magnetic characters would end up in the biggest piece of metal in every household: the fridge.

Around the same time, another inventor, William Zimmerman, went into the fridge magnet business with his "Magic Magnets", flat magnets with cartoon figures, smiley faces, and other playful characters. His magnets also included funny or inspirational phrases. 

Zimmerman was also the first to score a contract to make the first refrigerator magnets for the Walt Disney Company, while his son formed a rival magnet company landing a contract to make magnets for the Peanuts franchise.

__The introduction of magnets featuring popular intellectual properties was a turning point in refrigerator magnet history__. Cartoon characters, television mascots, and movie tie-ins became widely available, marking the beginning of fridge magnets as collectibles rather than just decorations.

With the new popularity, fridge magnets soon attained collectible status. A teacher who owns one of the largest collections of magnets in Britain, for instance, was [started as far back as 1987](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-38969439). And the [largest currently on record](https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/68573-largest-collection-of-fridge-magnets)? That's a mere 35.000-fridge magnet collection, proudly owned by Louise Greenfarb of Las Vegas, who's collected them since the '70s. 

(If you're jealous, don't be. Start now and you, too, may have a few tens of thousands of little refrigerator magnets in… fifty years. Just don't expect to have your fridge hold them all!)

In fact, iron-on transfers became popular in the 1960s and ‘70s, with early versions using plastisol inks printed onto paper, which could be heat-applied at home. They were iconic for their vintage appeal—but also infamous for cracking, peeling, or fading after just a few washes.

In the decades since, heat transfer technology has come a long way. Plastisol was joined (and often replaced) by vinyl, sublimation, and more recently, **DTF (Direct-to-Film)**—a modern technique that offers full-color, ultra-durable designs with flexible placement and a soft feel.

- **Minimum recommended resolution:** 240 PPI  
- **Color modes:** CMYK or RGB (we’ll match to your artwork)  
- **Black ink:** Use rich black (except for barcodes—those stay 100K)  
- **Minimum text size:** 12 pt  
- **Line weight:** 1.5 pt or thicker  
- **Leave 0.28" of empty space** around the artwork (don’t put design elements here—it’s part of the clear margin)

## How to apply a DTF transfer with a heat press

If you'll be applying DTF transfers regularly, we recommend investing in your own heat press. These machines provide consistent heat and even pressure across the entire design, which is crucial for proper adhesion and long-lasting results.  

Unlike household irons, which can have uneven heat spots and are harder to control, a heat press ensures every transfer looks professional and holds up wash after wash.

1. Preheat your press to **300°F**.  
2. Prep the garment by pressing for **10 seconds** to remove wrinkles and moisture.  
3. Place the transfer **film-side up** where you want the design.  
4. Press for **20 seconds** using firm, even pressure.  
5. Let it cool to a warm touch—**wait about a minute**.  
6. Peel the film slowly from a corner.  
7. If the transfer lifts: Lay it flat, **repress for 5–10 seconds**, and peel again once warm.

## Applying with a household iron

No press? No problem. You can still get great results using a regular household iron—just follow a few simple steps to make sure your DTF transfer sticks properly and looks its best.

1. Set your iron to **cotton/wool setting** (around 300°F).  
2. Preheat the garment with the iron for a smoother surface.  
3. Apply the transfer and **iron in smooth, even motions** for 20 seconds.  
4. Let it cool to warm, then peel.  

Be careful not to overheat (especially on denim or synthetic fabrics)—a lower temp with more time works best.

## Care tips & longevity

Sticker Mule’s DTF transfers are safe to machine wash. Be sure to turn garments inside out and use cool water and a gentle cycle for best results. If they wrinkle, simply repress them again with light heat after washing to flatten them out again. They are made of a thermoplastic material which is UV resistant, so they will last a long time with proper care.
