AI SEO Consultant Australia

Most of what ranks for "AI SEO consultant" in Australia is agency service pages answering a question about individual consulting. That's a mismatch worth naming rather than quietly copying, because hiring one person and hiring an agency are genuinely different engagements.
I'm Blake Smith, an Australian SEO strategist working across SEO, AI SEO and GEO, and the founder of Performance Agency. This page covers direct consulting work with me: what it includes, how it runs, how it's measured, what it costs, and where it stops.

What does an AI SEO consultant do?
An AI SEO consultant works out why AI systems such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name other businesses when a buyer asks about your category. Then they fix the causes.
Those causes usually fall into three groups:
pages AI crawlers can't access or read cleanly
business facts that are vague or inconsistent across the web
too little independent evidence backing up what you say about yourself
The consultant's job is to find out which of these is actually holding you back, then do or direct the work to fix it. Running every site through the same checklist is not the job.
AI SEO, GEO and AEO: what the terms mean
The industry uses these terms loosely, so here is how I use them.
AI SEO is the umbrella term. It means making a business visible wherever AI shapes what a searcher sees before they click anything, including Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the narrower work of getting cited inside generated answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and similar tools. It has nothing to do with geo-targeting.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) means structuring information so a system can serve it as a direct answer. AEO Consultant Australia covers that discipline in more depth.
In practice the three overlap heavily. The terminology matters much less than knowing which surface your buyers actually use.
Where the work starts: can AI systems read your site at all?
AI SEO consulting still starts with the same technical foundation traditional SEO has always needed. AI systems can't cite what they can't crawl and parse. A lot of AI-visibility problems turn out to be ordinary technical SEO problems wearing a new label.
A concrete example, because this stays abstract without one. In a case study for GoDaddy's resource hub, I described a client site whose key homepage content was rendered client-side rather than server-side. That content was invisible to Google's crawlers no matter how good it was. Restructuring the page so the content was server-rendered and fully crawlable produced immediate ranking improvements.
This problem matters even more for AI search. Many AI crawlers fetch the raw HTML and don't execute JavaScript at all, so content that Google can eventually render may simply not exist for them. I've run into this on my own site too: blog pagination driven by JavaScript that AI assistants like ChatGPT couldn't follow.
Crawler access is the other common blind spot. Each AI company runs its own bots, and the names aren't intuitive. OpenAI, for example, runs two separate crawlers:
GPTBot, which collects training data
OAI-SearchBot, which ChatGPT search relies on
A robots.txt rule or firewall setting written years ago can quietly remove a site from one engine while leaving it visible in another. Checking this takes an hour. Missing it can make every other piece of work irrelevant.
The AI-specific layer
Once the site can be read, the work shifts to four things.
Entity clarity. The business should be named unambiguously and described the same way everywhere, from your own site to ABN records, directories and profiles. It shouldn't be referred to by pronoun or a vague description that a machine can't tie back to you.
Passage structure. Each important question should be answered completely in a self-contained passage. AI systems lift passages, not whole pages.
Accurate schema markup. Structured data gives machines a clean way to parse who you are and what you offer. To be honest about it, though, Google states that no special markup is required to appear in its AI features. I implement schema where it accurately describes the page, not as a ranking shortcut.
Third-party corroboration. This means mentions, reviews, industry listings and editorial coverage on sites AI systems already trust. What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself.
Contributing to WP Creative's State of SEO roundup, I put it as: "SEO in 2026 will be driven by AI overview dominance, niche authority, and interactive content as search engines continue to refine how they display and prioritise information." That's the shift this kind of consulting is built around.
Every AI engine sources answers differently
There is no single "AI algorithm". The practical differences are worth understanding before you spend anything.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's own index. A page generally needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular search. Strong organic rankings on a topic make citation far more likely, so this is usually the hardest surface to win on a thin foundation.
ChatGPT needs OAI-SearchBot to be allowed before a site can appear in its search answers. OpenAI is clear that inclusion can't be guaranteed, and so is any honest consultant.
Perplexity runs its own crawler and shows its sources prominently, which makes it easier to see whether the work is landing.
Microsoft Copilot is grounded in Bing. That makes Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing's index matter in a way many Australian businesses ignore.
Where a vendor hasn't published how its retrieval works, I'll say so. In those cases the right move is the work that holds up regardless: clean crawlability, unambiguous entity signals and independent corroboration.
Why B2B is its own problem
B2B buyers increasingly use AI tools to build a vendor shortlist before they contact anyone. They ask questions like "best managed IT providers in Australia for mid-sized law firms" or "which payroll platforms suit Australian construction companies". These questions come long before any sales conversation, and a business that isn't named never learns it was ruled out.
For B2B, the work focuses on the comparison and shortlist questions your buyers ask, not only on top-of-funnel informational queries.
How a consulting engagement runs
1. Diagnosis. I test the questions your buyers actually ask across Google AI, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. For each question I record whether you're cited, mentioned or absent, and who appears instead. The diagnosis also covers:
a technical and crawler-access audit
an audit of your entity and business facts
a map of the sources AI systems are pulling from in your category
2. Foundation fixes. This means fixing rendering and crawl issues, bot access and schema, and aligning a single canonical set of business facts across the web. It's unglamorous work, and it's where most of the early gains come from.
3. Content and corroboration. Key pages get restructured so their passages stand alone. I build comparison and question-led content where buyers are asking, and earn mentions on the sites already being cited for your questions.
4. Measurement and iteration. The same set of questions is re-tested on a fixed schedule, and results are reported in plain language.
Expect movement to be measured in quarters, not weeks. Established domains with solid organic foundations tend to move sooner. New or thin sites need the foundation first.
How AI visibility is measured
AI answers vary from one run to the next, so a single screenshot proves very little. Useful measurement means tracking a fixed set of buyer questions over time and separating three outcomes:
being cited, where your site is a linked source
being mentioned, where you're named but not recommended
being absent
The final test is commercial: enquiries, qualified leads and pipeline, not "AI mentions" in isolation.
How much does an AI SEO consultant cost in Australia?
Pricing depends on how competitive your category is, the size of your site, and how far your digital footprint has drifted. As a guide, all prices ex-GST:
AI visibility audit (one-off diagnosis, platform by platform) - $1,500 to $5,000+
Foundation work (technical fixes, entity cleanup, schema) - $2,000 to $10,000+
Ongoing monitoring and advisory - $1,500 to $10,000+ per month
Multi-brand, enterprise or national B2B scopes - Quoted individually
The lower end of each range suits a single business with a reasonably clean site. The upper end covers contested national categories, large sites and engagements where I'm working closely with internal marketing and development teams.
Most engagements start with the audit, because paying monthly before you know what's actually wrong is the wrong order. Scope and pricing are confirmed after an initial conversation.
Common misconceptions
"Our SEO is strong, so we're already covered." Strong SEO is a real head start, especially for Google's AI features. It doesn't automatically deliver entity clarity, quotable passages or citation on ChatGPT and Perplexity.
"We can be cited within a month." Technical fixes can ship in weeks. Citation frequency moves once external sources back those signals up, and that takes longer.
"Schema is the secret." Schema helps machines parse your content accurately. It isn't a ranking lever on its own.
"Being mentioned means being recommended." An AI can name your business in passing while recommending a competitor. Those are different outcomes and should be tracked separately.
Who this suits
This suits a business that wants one senior person diagnosing the actual problem, technical or otherwise, rather than a generic AI SEO checklist. It works best for a business that:
already has an established site, customers and revenue for the work to build on
measures success in leads and pipeline, not impressions
will let changes actually ship on the website
can give the work a few quarters to compound
It's a weaker fit for a business that needs a large content production pipeline running continuously, which is usually better served by a team. Best AI SEO Agencies in Australia covers that comparison. Larger scopes that need more hands than one consultant can provide are routed through Performance Agency, the agency I founded.
What this page doesn't include
This page includes no invented client results, rankings or revenue figures, and no guaranteed citations, because nobody can promise those. The GoDaddy case study above is the kind of specific, checkable example this page relies on instead of vague claims. If a particular result matters to your decision, ask me directly.
FAQs
What is an AI SEO consultant?
A specialist who works out why AI search tools recommend other businesses in your category, and then fixes the causes. The usual causes are crawl access, rendering, entity clarity, content structure and third-party corroboration.
Is AI SEO different from just optimising for Google's AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are one part of it. AI SEO also covers visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Each draws on different sources and needs its own consideration.
Do I need an AI SEO consultant if I already have an SEO agency?
It depends on what that agency is already doing. If AI-search visibility isn't a distinct line item in their reporting, ask them directly rather than assuming it's covered by default.
Should I hire a consultant or an agency?
AI SEO consultant vs agency in Australia sets out the actual decision factors rather than a generic pros-and-cons list.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
Technical and access fixes can take effect quickly. Consistent citation across engines is usually measured over quarters. How long it takes depends on how established your domain and organic rankings already are.
Can you guarantee my business will be cited by ChatGPT or Google AI?
No. The AI companies themselves don't guarantee inclusion. What I can do is remove the barriers, build the signals these systems rely on, and measure honestly whether it's working.
Should I block AI crawlers?
That's a business decision, but make it deliberately. Blocking the wrong bot can remove you from AI search results entirely. The bots that collect training data and the bots that power search answers are often separate, and they can be handled differently.
How much does an AI SEO consultant cost in Australia?
As a ballpark, a one-off AI visibility audit runs from $1,500 to $5,000+ and foundation work from $2,000 to $10,000+. Ongoing monitoring and advisory runs from $1,500 to $10,000+ per month. All prices are ex-GST and depend on the size of the site and how competitive the category is.
