## Best practices: how to create DTF transfers

We make designing your transfer as simple and straightforward as designing die-cut stickers. Here are the basics to keep in mind:

- **Minimum recommended resolution:** 240 PPI  
- **Color modes:** CMYK or RGB (we’ll match to your artwork)  
- **Black ink:** Use rich black (except for barcodes—those stay 100K)  
- **Minimum text size:** 12 pt  
- **Line weight:** 1.5 pt or thicker  
- **Leave 0.28" of empty space** around the artwork (don’t put design elements here—it’s part of the clear margin)

## How to apply a DTF transfer with a heat press

If you'll be applying DTF transfers regularly, we recommend investing in your own heat press. These machines provide consistent heat and even pressure across the entire design, which is crucial for proper adhesion and long-lasting results.  

Unlike household irons, which can have uneven heat spots and are harder to control, a heat press ensures every transfer looks professional and holds up wash after wash.

1. Preheat your press to **300°F**.  
2. Prep the garment by pressing for **10 seconds** to remove wrinkles and moisture.  
3. Place the transfer **film-side up** where you want the design.  
4. Press for **20 seconds** using firm, even pressure.  
5. Let it cool to a warm touch—**wait about a minute**.  
6. Peel the film slowly from a corner.  
7. If the transfer lifts: Lay it flat, **repress for 5–10 seconds**, and peel again once warm.

## Applying with a household iron

No press? No problem. You can still get great results using a regular household iron—just follow a few simple steps to make sure your DTF transfer sticks properly and looks its best.

1. Set your iron to **cotton/wool setting** (around 300°F).  
2. Preheat the garment with the iron for a smoother surface.  
3. Apply the transfer and **iron in smooth, even motions** for 20 seconds.  
4. Let it cool to warm, then peel.  

Be careful not to overheat (especially on denim or synthetic fabrics)—a lower temp with more time works best.

## Care tips & longevity

Sticker Mule’s DTF transfers are safe to machine wash. Be sure to turn garments inside out and use cool water and a gentle cycle for best results. If they wrinkle, simply repress them again with light heat after washing to flatten them out again. They are made of a thermoplastic material which is UV resistant, so they will last a long time with proper care.

## Material and construction

### Acrylic face with glossy finish

Our use of a glossy acrylic face with matte ink creates a premium look and feel. Cheaper magnets typically use low-grade plastic or vinyl with no finish distinction, making them look dull and flimsy.

### Neodymium magnets

We use a nickel-plated N42-grade neodymium magnet. Neodymium is the strongest magnetic material available, significantly more powerful than the weaker ferrite or ceramic magnets others use. Our internal testing shows that one of our magnets can hold up eight sheets of standard 8.5" x 11" copy paper on a refrigerator.

### Thickness

At 0.118" (about 3mm), plus 0.04" for the magnet (about 1mm), our magnets are thicker and sturdier than many alternatives.

### Protective film

All of our magnets come from the factory with protective film to protect them from scratches during shipping, something rarely seen in mass-produced, low-quality magnets.

## Precision in design and assembly

### Precision laser cutting

Our factories are able to cut sharp, precise edges (with a 0.03" radius for rounded corners). In cheaper magnets, you'll often find rough and uneven die-cutting or even manual trimming.

### Inner cuts

We support a custom 0.25" inner cut with a minimum 0.125" buffer from the edge. For non-designers, this means you can have a quarter-inch hole or shape inside the magnet, with sufficient material around it to keep it strong and intact. Budget magnets typically lack such customization options. 

### Fully assembled

The neodymium magnet is securely glued during assembly, unlike low-quality options where magnets are often loosely attached or require user assembly. This is especially important if your magnets will be around young children or pets.

### Size Range

We offer a wide range of size options, as small as 0.75" x 0.75", as large as  3" x 3", and everything in between. Most magnet makers limit you to standard sizes with no customization.

How to remove sticker residue

One of the questions our customer service team gets asked the most is: "how do I remove sticker residue". As much as everyone loves stickers, nobody likes sticker residue.

The great Vinny answered this question back in July 2020, but the questions keep coming. Here is a recap of the most foolproof ways to get rid of sticker residue.

### Rubbing alcohol
Use an old washcloth to apply rubbing alcohol to the residue. It should break down easily and then you can wipe it away with a damp towel. 

This technique is best for fabric and electronics.

### Goo Gone
[Goo Gone](https://www.amazon.com/Goo-Gone-Original-Liquid-Adhesive/dp/B07PW7J8QG/) is specifically designed for removing adhesive. Just spray the residue and wipe with a towel.

Goo Gone is ideal for hard surfaces like glass, metal, plastic, and wood. 

### Peanut butter
Take a small dab with your finger and rub into the residue. The oils from the peanut butter will break apart the stickiness. This method is a little unconventional, but works (and tastes) great.

This also works for the same surfaces as Goo Gone. For a less tasty alternative, you can use other oil-based products like WD-40 or cooking oil. 

### Other products to use
If you’re short on any of the supplies above, you can also try other household products. Here's a comprehensive list:

#### For fabric

- Rubbing alcohol
- Nail polish remover (acetone-based)
- Freeze, then scrape off the residue

#### For electronics 

- Rubbing alcohol
- Microfiber cloth with vinegar

#### For hard surfaces 

- WD-40
- Goo Gone 
- Cooking oil (coconut, olive, or vegetable)

#### For most other surfaces

- Soap and warm water
- Rubbing alcohol
- Hand sanitizer
- White vinegar
- Baking Soda Paste (mix baking soda with a little water, apply, let sit, and wipe off)
- Laundry detergent

### Other techniques to try
If you’re still having trouble, here are a few more techniques you can try.

- To remove residue from glass products, try soaking them in warm, soapy water overnight.

- To remove residue from clothing, try scrubbing the residue with a toothbrush instead of a paper towel.

- For glass, wood, and walls, try heating the residue for no more than 30 seconds with a blow dryer and then scraping it off with a putty knife.

Once the residue is gone, you’ve got a perfect spot for a brand new sticker.

We've prepared this detailed guide for you or your designer to help you make the most of your sign.

If you're not a designer, don't worry. Just submit your design and in the proofing process our experts will help make sure your sign meets all of these criteria.

###Make your artwork shine

Your artwork is at the heart of your sign. To ensure it looks its best, keep these things in mind in your design:

Resolution matters: Aim for a resolution of 300 PPI. This ensures sharp, clear images without pixelation.

- __Color accuracy__ - Submit files in CMYK or RGB to match your original design.

- __Black guidelines__ - Use rich black to achieve deep, uniform tones.

- __Text and lines__ - Stick to a minimum font size of 6 pt and line width of 0.5 pt for clarity. If you’re using white lines, go for at least 1 pt width to ensure visibility.

###Planning the perfect layout

- __Borders__ - Keep borders at least 0.03125" thick to avoid cuts affecting the design. We recommend a 1" border (or 90% of the ordered size) for the best aesthetic balance.

- __Bleed__ - Full bleed is not possible, so ensure your design doesn’t extend past the edges.

- __Safe zones__ - If you’re adding drill holes for mounting, leave at least 1.19" of space from the edge of your design to prevent overlap.

- __Spacer holes__ - Want to mount your sign? You can optionally include between two to four spacer holes with a standard diameter of 0.315". These ensure secure mounting and a clean look.

- __Inner cuts__ - Add a unique cut-out within your sign for a distinctive design. Just ensure it's large enough (minimum size: 0.25") and maintain material stability by leaving at least 0.125" between the cut and the edge.

##What are printed transfer stickers?
Standard transfer stickers aren’t actually printed at all. They are cut to the exact shape of each piece of a design. This is why they only come in all-black or all-white. This works fine for many designs, but of course, has its limitations.

##How to apply printed transfer stickers
A special tape holds your design together, making it easy to apply your transfer stickers. To apply, slowly pull the transfer tape from the paper backing. Next, place the sticker on your desired surface and then use your fingers to apply pressure across the face of the sticker, making sure it properly adheres. You can also use a credit card to reinforce the adhesion.

Remember: Printed transfer stickers look best when applied to smooth surfaces — think windows, laptops, or cars.

If your design is particularly delicate, you may want to wait 24 hours before removing the transfer tape. When it’s ready, slowly peel the transfer tape off to reveal your full color design.
