##Setting up your file

First, let’s open up [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio). You can find it from our homepage under __Tools ➔ Studio__, or go directly to [stickermule.com/studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio).

Click __Create design__.

Then, click __New design__ in the top left corner to choose your type of design.

Scroll to find the type of design you need, or simply type it in the search bar. In this case, select __Poster__.

We’ll be designing in an __18 x 24” size__. You can change the size at any time, right there in the toolbar.

##How to design your personalized movie poster

Follow these simple steps to create a personalized movie poster in [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio). If you have a specific movie in mind to create a parody of, search for some reference images online and see what elements need to be in there to make it recognizable enough. 

__We want to design a parody, not a copy.__ So make sure to stay away from copying material too literally, and try to make it your own. 

For this project, we’ll be designing a birthday poster for my nephew Bob. He’s a huge cowboy fanatic and recently fell in love with that one movie about talking toys. You know the one.


###Step 1: Select a background color

Click the __Background__ button on top and set your background color.

###Step 2: Add a photo

You can either use a photo as a full background or have a traced image to blend with the background color. With this photo, for example, I would like to [remove the background](https://www.stickermule.com/trace).

If you don’t have your hands on expensive software like Adobe Photoshop, we made it possible to do this right inside [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio). And it’s completely free. We’re just that cool.

First, go to __Uploads__ and select __Upload image__. Select your file and click __Open__.

With the image selected, head over to __Edit image__ in the top left corner and click __Remove background__. Now we’ll do our magic.

And after a couple of seconds… tadaa!

###Step 3: Add text

Because I already know which iconic movie poster I want to mimic, the style of typography I need to work with is quite clear to me. The only challenge might be to find a free font that comes close to this. 

Luckily, [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio) is packed with more fonts than you’ll need. And they’re all 100% free to use, so no need to stress about that.

First, go to __Text__ and select __Add a heading__. Type your text and start scrolling through the fonts until you find your perfect match. 

For me, it was [Luckiest Guy](https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Luckiest+Guy). It’s a very bold, playful font that matched the vibe perfectly. Again, it’s not a literal copy, but it makes it all the better. Because it’s original.

You can change color, size, letter spacing, and much more. 

We’ll need to have a blue layer below the text to make it recognizable. A clever trick is to simply duplicate this text and move it down. Hold __Shift + Option__ (Mac) or __Shift + Alt__ (Windows), then drag the text downward a bit.

To make it complete, I need to add a red shape below the heading. You can either go to __Shapes__ and select one of our premade shapes. Because this shape is quite specific, I’ll be importing it as an __SVG__.

Now let’s find a matching font to use inside the red shape. I chose [Fira Sans](https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Fira+Sans), which works nicely in all caps.

Pretty awesome already, right? Now, another text element that’s super recognizable on movie posters: __quotes__. To fit more text in limited space, studios often use condensed fonts. 

These are typefaces where the letters are narrower, so you can squeeze in more without shrinking the size too much.

Again, [Studio](https://www.stickermule.com/studio) has tons of free fonts to choose from, and I found [Oswald](https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Oswald) pretty fitting for this purpose. Type a fun text and maybe even add some stars in there to make it even more ‘movie-like’.

Nice! And the same can be said about this poster; this is definitely going to be awesome!
Now I’ll be adding a date for the birthday party and writing a fun story that can be used on the bottom to look like a list of credits. This is also one of these iconic elements from movie posters that will really amp up your design. 

It adds a lot of fun, and people will laugh when they find out it’s actually a tailored piece of text for the birthday boy. Maybe share a fun story about him or tell how cool he is with his cowboy hat on, __get creative with it__.

This will also look best with a __condensed__ font. I have used [Oswald](https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Oswald) for all of these condensed texts.

###Step 4: Add a gradient

If you’re using traced photos, it often looks good when it’s __blended with the background__ a bit. A clever trick to do this is by adding a gradient shape. 

Go to __Shapes__ and select a regular square.

Then, choose __Vertical gradient__ in the __Fill style__ options.

Now rotate it by __clicking and dragging the rotate handle__. 

Then, go to Arrangement in the toolbar, or use __Cmd + [__ (Mac) or __Ctrl + [ __(Windows) to move the gradient behind the text.

###Step 5: Add graphics

To add the finishing touch to the design, __let’s add some graphics__. You can either upload your own elements or browse through the library. I’ll be adding some clouds.

When you have your element selected, you can __easily recolor it using the color option__ in the toolbar. Simply click on it and you’ll be able to choose your perfect color. I’ll be using white.

And let’s add some __movie-like elements__ to finish it up.

###Step 1) Find a cool photo of your dog

That should go without saying, but it's still worth emphasizing — it's the most important step. So take your time and go through the hundreds of pet pictures we know you have on your camera roll, and make sure you really get the pick of the litter. 

For a great, natural shot, you want a photograph that checks all these boxes:

- Has great natural lighting

##How to create versions of your dog photo in different styles using AI

Just a note about AI-generated images. While AI does an impressive job of mimicking artistic styles at lightning speed, there's really no substitute for a real human artist to truly capturing the essence of a subject. That said, by playing around and modifying your prompt, you can have the AI fine-tune the drawing similar to how an artist might. 

At this point, AI is probably best for things like parody and fun—for example, a personalized Scooby-Doo quote would go well with the image here on a t-shirt. But if you're looking for serious artwork like a portrait, be sure to find a human!

How to crop images in Adobe Illustrator

###Step 3: Select both your shape and image

Make sure the image is placed __on top__ of the shape. If needed, __select and right-click__ the image and select __Arrange > Bring to Front__.

###Step 4: Create clipping mask

With both selected, go to __Object > Clipping Mask > Make__ (__⌘+7__ on Mac, __Ctrl+7__ on Windows). Use the __Direct Selection Tool (A)__ if you want to move or scale the image.

###Step 5: Add a margin around your shape (optional)

In case you’d like to add a margin, for printing purposes for example, just __double-click__ the shape and copy it (__⌘+C__ on Mac, __Ctrl+C__ on Windows). 

Then, __double-click outside of the shape__ to exit the clipping mask and use __Paste in Back__ (__⌘+B__ on Mac, __Ctrl+B__ on Windows).

###Step 6: Offset Path

Now go to __Object > Path > Offset Path__ and enter your margin value. Use at least __0.125"__ for print projects like [photo magnets](https://www.stickermule.com/uses/photo-magnets) and [die cut stickers](https://www.stickermule.com/products/die-cut-stickers). Click __OK__ and you’re done!

##Edit clipping masks

After creating your clipping mask, you can still make changes:

- __Move the image inside the mask:__ Select the __Direct Selection tool (A)__, click on your image, and reposition it within the mask.

- __Resize the image:__ With the Direct Selection tool, select your image and switch back to the __Selection tool (V)__ and use the transform handles to scale it.

- __Edit the mask shape:__ Use the __Direct Selection__ tool to select and adjust the points of your star or other shape.

- __Release the mask:__ Select your clipped object, right-click and choose "Release Clipping Mask" (__⌘+Opt+7__ on Mac, __Ctrl+Alt+7__ on Windows) if you need to start over.

##Pro tips for perfect clipping masks

- __Group before masking:__ If you're masking multiple objects, group them first (__⌘+G__ on Mac, __Ctrl+G__ on Windows)

- __Add bleed for printing:__ Make your mask shape slightly larger than your final cut size (typically __0.125"__ or __3mm__) to avoid white edges on printed products

- __Save a copy:__ Before creating complex masks, save a copy of your original artwork


- __Use compound paths:__ For masks with holes (like a donut shape), use Compound Paths (__Object > Compound Path > Make__)

How to make your own National Park magnets

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the "Mighty 5", the five National Parks of Utah including Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. 

One of the most awe-inspiring hikes was going through Bryce Canyon. I went with my family in February, meaning we had to wear ice spikes and winter clothes. It also meant we were treated to some of the most spectacular views available any time of the year with clear, crisp air and the hoodoo rock formations frosted with snow.

After our hike, we went to the Visitor Center. I wanted to treat my daughter to a nice souvenir so we could always remember our experience. 

In the magnet part of the National Park store, I came across magnets that looked like this.

Let me explain what you're looking at:

1. The image is a stock photo the manufacturer of this magnet [downloaded from iStockPhoto](https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/bryce-sunrise-gm465425161-33661250), taken in 2014
1. Even a junior designer can see that whoever "designed" this magnet did a horrific job at color correction. (Spoiler alert: the real Bryce Canyon is not the color of vomit)
1. The typography is hard-to-read and forgettable
1. Making matters worse, this magnet was mass produced in China, 6,500 miles away from Bryce Canyon

Every other magnet on sale was equally forgettable. 

What would you say if I told you that you could create your own National Park magnet:

##How to make your own National Park magnet

I'll go beyond saying it. I'll show you how I did it. 

###1. Select your photo

Believe it or not, choosing the right photo ended up being the most time-consuming part of this process. 

On the hike, I literally took over 500 pictures. If you've ever hiked Bryce Canyon, you'll know that an entire scene might look dramatically different in the matter of just a few minutes depending on the time of day, the weather, and even your viewing angle.

I finally decided on this one, one of the iconic views of a formation called Thor's Hammer, taken on my iPhone.

###2. Go to Sticker Mule Studio

###3. Choose your dimensions

The first step is to input your dimensions. I decided to use a width and height that matched the magnet I saw in the gift shop. 

- I changed the units to inches
- I entered 3 inches for the width
- I entered 2.5 inches for the height

The canvas size automatically adjusts once you enter this information.

###4. Upload your photo

Next, it's time to upload your photo. 

- Click the Uploads icon on the left side. 

- Click the blue __Upload Image__ button and upload your image.  Your photo will be placed onto the canvas.

###5. Adjust the photo to cover the entire canvas

If the aspect ratio of your photo doesn’t match the canvas, don't worry; simply enlarge and position the image as desired. Any portion outside the canvas will be automatically cropped.

If you intend to include text on your image, make sure to leave some blank space on the canvas.

Use the controls at the bottom of the page to zoom in or out of the canvas as needed.

###6. Put in text

The next step was to put in text. 

Click on the Text icon on the left-hand menu to reveal different text styles and templates. I chose the template that says "ASAP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"

I ungrouped the text and adjusted the color and positioning until I was happy with it. Notice how I intentionally cropped the photo so that there'd be a nice section of deep blue sky where a white font would stand out.

I clicked the __Order prints__ button in the top right corner. 

I figured I'd order the sample pack of 10 for $9. This way I'd have enough for my family, and also some to give out for Christmas and birthdays. 

For comparison, 10 mass-produced magnets at the gift shop would have cost me $39.90.

###7. Double-check everything

On the final step you'll want to double-check everything. Does the text look clear? Are all the words spelled correctly? Does the image appear crisp and in focus? Did you accidentally leave some gaps or unwanted white space around the canvas? 

I was pretty happy with mine, so I added it to my cart.

###8. Check out

On the checkout page, you'll enter or verify your shipping information, delivery date, and billing information. You'll see a note reminding you that orders created in Studio will bypass the proofing process (which you don't need because you can see exactly what the final product will look like on your screen).

###9. Order confirmation

Check out, and you'll get to a final confirmation page.

Your product will be sent to production and manufactured.

For those who didn't create their design in Studio, at this point order will go through our proofing process, where our team will send them an e-mail asking them to approve the final proof before being sent to production.

##Unboxing

Just one week later, my package arrived (two days before the estimated date).

As usual with Sticker Mule shipments, I got a few surprises in my package including the one I was hoping for: a few packets of Sticker Mule sauce! 

But of course, what I was looking forward to most was this: my 10 magnets carefully wrapped in shrink-wrap, which I quickly unwrapped. 

And here is how my magnets turned out.

I couldn’t be happier. The final product blew away anything I saw in the National Park gift shop. The colors were richer, the scene more meaningful—and best of all, it wasn’t some generic photo taken by a stock photographer a decade ago. It was the actual view I experienced with my family just two months earlier.

One thing I noticed—and something many customers have pointed out—is that these magnets are surprisingly thin. In my case, I also decided to [make a donation](https://shop.brycecanyon.org/donate.asp) to the Bryce Canyon Association, the official nonprofit partner of the park. 

When you gift your magnets to others, consider adding a note encouraging them to visit and support the parks too.

Clipping masks: miracle tool or printing nightmare?

On the production team at Sticker Mule, we often come across strange lines, missing artwork elements, or unexpected color issues. The culprit is often something you don’t expect: clipping masks.

Clipping masks are a powerful tool for controlling how images and shapes appear in your designs. They let you easily mask images into text, apply gradients within specific areas, or hide unwanted elements—without permanently altering your artwork.

But while they work wonders on screen, they can cause unexpected issues when it comes to printing.

Let’s break down why clipping masks can cause print errors and how to fix them.

##Why do clipping masks cause printing problems?

On your screen, clipping masks make artwork look clean and professional. However, when sent to print, they can introduce unwanted artifacts, misalignment issues, or missing elements. Here’s why:

- __Phantom lines or outlines__ – The edges of the clipping mask may still be faintly visible in the final print, even if they look perfect in Illustrator.

- __Misinterpreted colors__ – Clipping masks sometimes cause colors within the masked area to be interpreted incorrectly by printers.

- __Missing artwork__ – Some elements inside a clipping mask might disappear entirely when printed.

- __Raster and vector conflicts__ – If your file has both raster and vector elements inside a clipping mask, it can cause unpredictable results in the final print.

To avoid these issues, it’s best to __design without clipping masks whenever possible__—especially for print-ready artwork.

The video below shows what can happen when we receive an artwork with a lot of clipping masks. This particular artwork includes some vector elements, and we try to keep those by removing the clipping masks, which helps ensure the best quality for printing. 

There are a few steps we take to remove them. 

- First, in Illustrator, go to __Object__ > __Flatten Transparency__. Flattening the transparency is important to preserve the artwork’s look. 
- Next, to remove the clipping masks, go to __Pathfinder__ > __Merge__. As you’ll see in the video, sometimes the colors can get mixed up—like the green areas turning darker. In cases like this, where there’s a mix of clipping masks and raster images with vector art, we may need to rasterize the entire artwork to keep its original appearance.

##How to prepare artwork without clipping masks for printing

If you're using clipping masks in your design, here are three effective ways to remove them while maintaining high-quality output.

###Option 1: Recreate the gradient in Illustrator (best for vector artwork)

If you’ve used a clipping mask to apply a gradient to an object, consider creating the gradient directly in Illustrator instead. Here’s how:

Select the object you want to apply the gradient to.

1. Open the Gradient panel (__Window__ > __Gradient__).
1. Apply a new gradient to the object.
1. Save it as a swatch (__Swatches__ > __New Swatch__) to maintain consistency across your artwork.

By using Illustrator’s built-in gradients, you keep the artwork vector-based, ensuring a crisp, clean print.

By default, when you apply a gradient to live text in Illustrator, each letter receives its own individual gradient, which can disrupt the visual flow. To apply one smooth, continuous gradient across all the letters, simply convert the text into a Compound Path (⌘+8 on Mac, Ctrl+8 on Windows). This treats the text as a single shape, allowing the gradient to flow seamlessly from one end to the other.

###Option 2: Rasterize the clipped artwork (best for image-based designs)

If you’re clipping an image into text or a shape, you can rasterize the design to flatten everything into a single layer. Keep in mind that this will turn vector elements into pixels, so use it carefully:
Select the artwork (⌘+A / Ctrl+A).

1. Go to __Object__ > __Rasterize__.
1. Choose High (300 dpi) for print-quality output. 
1. Click OK.

When should you rasterize? If your design has a mix of raster and vector elements, we recommend rasterizing the entire artwork before printing to avoid overlapping issues. Remember to rasterize the file at the desired printable size to ensure a quality print.

###Option 3: Use the Pathfinder tool (best for fully vector artwork)

If your artwork is entirely vector-based, you can use the Pathfinder tool to remove clipping masks and preserve scalability.

1. Select all objects (⌘+A / Ctrl+A).
1. Open the Pathfinder panel (__Window__ > __Pathfinder__).
1. Click Merge to combine overlapping areas and remove any hidden clipping masks.

This ensures everything prints cleanly without excess elements affecting the final output.

## Final tips for print-ready files

To avoid common pitfalls when sending your artwork to print:
- Always test-print a small sample before submitting your final file.
- Save two versions: one editable file and one flattened print-ready file.
- Convert text to outlines (__Type__ > __Create Outlines__) to prevent font issues.
- Use PDF or EPS format for best compatibility with printers.
